Physicians
Physician (chapter 630, 630A or 633 of NRS).
Nevada Licensed Physicians may have degrees as Medical Doctors (M.D.) or Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.). Although, M.D.s and D.O.s are quite similar in their practices, an M.D. is an allopathic physician and a D.O. is an osteopathic physician.
Allopathic Medicine
Medical Doctors (M.D.s) are trained in allopathic medicine, which means, literally, “different suffering”. The Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary defines Allopathy as “a system of medical practice that aims to combat disease by use of remedies (as drugs or surgery) producing effects different from or incompatible with those produced by the disease being treated.” It is further defined as “a system of medical practice making use of all measures that have proved of value in treatment of disease”. According to the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners, there were 5,092 Allopathic Physicians licensed to practice in the State of Nevada in 2016.
Osteopathic Medicine
Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine refers to a system that was developed in 1874. The Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary defines Osteopathy as “a system of medical practice based on a theory that diseases are due chiefly to loss of structural integrity which can be restored by manipulation of the parts supplemented by therapeutic measures (as use of medicine or surgery)”. According to the Nevada State Board of Osteopathic Medicine, there were 688 Osteopathic Physicians licensed to practice in the State of Nevada in 2016.
